Extra Income Ideas for Moms: Make Money Online or Off?

If you’re interested in making money on the side as a busy mom, there’s one important question to ask: Do I want to make money online or off?

Between the two, I lean toward making money online.

Moms are busy taking care of kids, running a household and in some cases, working a regular job outside the home. So you need ideas for making extra money that fit into your schedule.

Making money online means you have flexibility. And there are lots of different ways moms can make extra income online so you can pick something that fits your schedule and your skills.

But if you’re looking for offline side hustles, there are plenty of other ways to make money. And some you can even do from home so you can be there for your kids.

Best Extra Income Ideas for Moms

Start a blog

Blogging is one of the best extra income ideas for moms because of how profitable it can be. There are top mom bloggers making $10,000, $20,000 or even $100,000 a month from their sites.

I make $3,000 or so each month with this blog and that’s only working on it a few hours a week. It’s a nice passive income that supplements what I make freelancing.

If you want to start a mom blog, you’ll need a few basics:

  • A good, profitable niche
  • A domain name
  • Hosting (I use NameHero for my blogs)

Those are the bare necessities to get started as a blogger.

You can decide on extras like a theme or plugins later. (And for that, be sure to check out my favorite blogging tools to help you make money!)

Once you lay that foundation you can focus on how to monetize your blog and turn it into a money-making machine.

For example, you can make money with ads or affiliate marketing. Share A Sale is one of the most popular places to find affiliate products for new bloggers.

Other extra income ideas for moms who blog include:

  • Writing sponsored posts
  • Becoming a brand ambassador on Instagram
  • Offering a service, such as a freelance writing or virtual assistant help
  • Creating and selling a product, like an online course or a printable planner

The great thing about blogging for moms is that there are so many ways to make extra income. And once you get your monetization strategy down, a lot of the money you make could be passive income which is even better!

Here’s a closer look at how to start a mom blog that makes money.

Start a side hustle

Starting a side hustle is one of my favorite extra income ideas for moms because there are so many ways to make money on the side.

For example, you could try offline side hustles like:

  • Shopping for Instacart
  • Delivering food with DoorDash
  • Walking dogs or pet-sitting
  • Getting paid to run errands
  • Become a mystery shopper
  • Doing odd jobs on TaskRabbit
  • Driving for Uber or Lyft
  • House-sitting
  • Offering child care in your home

There are also plenty of online side hustles for moms and women you could try.

One of the easiest side hustles for moms is taking online for cash. Some of the best survey sites pay $50 or more per survey!

Another easy way for moms to make money is getting cashback when you shop.

Cash back apps pay you back a percentage of what you spend. All you have to do is download the apps, link them to your debit card or credit card, then shop and earn free cash!

Two of the best apps for earning cashback are Rakuten and Ibotta.

Rakuten offers up to 40% cashback when you shop online or in stores at partner retailers. With Ibotta, you can earn cash back on groceries and shopping online or offline.

And both Rakuten and Ibotta offer cash bonuses when you sign up!

There are so many side hustles to choose from but some of them have more earning potential than others. And some take up more of your time than others.

When looking for side hustles you can do as a mom, it’s important to keep both of those things in mind. So here are some more of my side hustles for busy moms, single moms and working women.

Make money teaching online

Teaching online is a great extra income idea for moms who want a creative way to make money that’s also flexible.

With a platform like Outschool, moms can sign up to teach virtual classes from the comfort of their own homes.

Outschool is an online learning platform for kids K-12. Anyone can sign up to teach a class, no previous teaching experience is needed.

You do need to be able to pass a criminal background check. And of course, you need to have a great idea for a class to teach.

But Outschool can be a perfect extra income source for moms who need flexibility when making money online. And it can be highly profitable, as I know of several moms who make $5,000 on the platform each month. (And one who even makes $10,000!)

Here’s a complete guide to teaching with Outschool.

Sell things for extra cash

Selling things online or offline is the easiest way to make extra money, especially if you need money quickly.

Here’s a list of 40+ things to sell to make money if you need cash ASAP.

If you don’t have things on hand to sell, you could always make something to sell instead.

For example, you could try selling:

If you’re interested in passive income for moms, then digital products or courses are the way to go. You can create them once, then sell them again and again for a steady stream of income.

Printables and low-content books are two great examples of easy digital products to create using a tool like Canva.
